Curriculum Develops Problem-Solving Abilities and Reasoning Skills

By Avery Copeland, Intern for University Communications

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gardner-Webb University’s Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program provides students with a strong foundation in core concepts of higher mathematics, implementing both traditional and modern approaches throughout the curriculum. The program seeks to develop well-rounded graduates with strong problem-solving abilities and advanced quantitative and analytical reasoning skills who can make a positive, lasting impact on society in a variety of fields.

Jailyn Tineo, a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Gardner-Webb, joined the program because of her passion for patterns, puzzles, and uncovering how things work. Through her studies, Tineo learned about data processing and artificial intelligence, preparing her for a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) that may involve analyzing statistical data. “We studied a lot about machine learning and data processing,” Tineo shared, reflecting on her experience.

The program’s curriculum is designed to train students to mathematically analyze and interpret data across various fields, resulting in graduates of the Gardner-Webb mathematics program pursuing careers as engineers, statisticians, developers, researchers, designers, bankers, quality control professionals, and more. “There is a huge need for people who know how data processing works,” Tineo noted. “Every STEM-related field requires the analysis of statistics, whether it’s psychology or biology—they all need somebody who knows how to interpret that data.”

Students in the program are taught to effectively communicate complex mathematical concepts in both written and oral forms. Students seeking this degree receive specialized training to excel in various fields, including computation, engineering, and other STEM-related disciplines. For further academic and professional growth, students are encouraged to join the University’s Math Club, which provides opportunities for networking and collaboration with professors and other students within the department.

“At Gardner-Webb, you get that one-on-one instruction from your professors,” Tineo emphasized. “On top of that, there’s just a lot of personalized instruction and support within the department.”
